UV absorbent masterbatch
Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) rays that cause rapid deterioration of some foods (especially oils and fatty foods) or specific components of a food such as certain vitamins. Flavors and colorings can also be destroyed by strong UV light. UV rays can also cause packaging materials to fade or to become brittle and lose their properties (for example polythene). In general all food should be stored in the shade away from direct sunlight. Electric lights do not have the same effects on foods because they do not contain the UV component. If the organic food product is light-sensitive, a suitable packaging material has to be chosen. The UV absorber PET preform/bottle and also masterbatch granules can absorb harmful UV light in both active and passive form and extend the food life such as edible liquid oil and beverages.
It is expected that the polymers to be applied in food packaging acts as a good barrier to light incidence in the UV range. Their high UV-barrier is desirable to protect especially unsaturated lipid components in food from formation of radicals, thus accelerating their spoilage. The UV-absorber masterbatch contains passive and active additive which can reflect and absorb UV light. The passive additive acts like a shield and reflect the UV light when the beam tries to transmit through the PET film, i.e. PET bottle wall. In the other side, the active additive absorbs the UV light during UV beam transmission through the polymeric wall. Therefore, the UV light transmittance will be inhibited completely.
